Electric water heater replacement is swapping out an existing electric unit that's failed or is old enough that another repair doesn't make financial sense. Electric units generally have a similar lifespan to gas units, and replacement becomes the right call once the tank itself starts failing or repair costs start approaching what a new unit would cost.
You're likely looking at replacement rather than repair if the tank is leaking from the body rather than a fitting, it's ten-plus years old and elements or thermostats have already been replaced once, recovery time has gotten noticeably slower, or the unit is tripping breakers repeatedly despite element replacement. A tank that's rusting through at the bottom is a clear sign it's time for a new unit rather than another repair.
We start by disconnecting power and water to the old unit and safely removing it, checking the existing electrical connections and breaker capacity against the new unit's requirements. If you're staying with a similar tank size, existing wiring usually works fine. If you're upgrading capacity or switching to a larger tank, we'll confirm the electrical setup can handle it before installing. The new unit gets wired, connected to water lines, leveled, and the thermostat and pressure relief valve set correctly, with a full test run before we consider the job done.
Cost depends on tank size and whether existing electrical wiring and breaker capacity are adequate for the new unit or need upgrading. Homes in Buffalo, NY with older electrical panels occasionally need minor updates if the replacement unit has different power requirements than the original.
